I wouldn’t be too concerned about walking in a 4″ heel, unless you have little to no experience.

It’s really about training the arch of your foot. Start by just standing for twenty minutes, then slip them off and allow your arch to relax. Do it again a few more times over 2 or 3 days. Ideally, start with 2.5 or 3 inch heel if not used to wearing heels at all. Standing can be more difficult than walk for the sake of balance, so practice just standing in a 3″ first.

Remember to keep switching back to flats or sneakers after a little time in the heels. You’re training. Like working out, but you’re not building muscle. Although you need to rest between sets.

While “training”, when you start to practice walking, you might want to use a heel with an ankle strap. It tends to be a little easier.

Keep at it. After 3 days of standing in heels, you should be ready to walk. Strongly recommended to practice for several weeks in the comfort of your own home. When you’re ready to hit the streets, keep in mind flats fit in most purses (for emergency foot relief).

hope that helps! :)

I don’t get why the articles are always for either sexy spike heels OR exceedingly unattractive orthopedic horrors. I clicked the link above for the “comfortable” shoes thinking it was going to be sexy looking shoes designed for longer wear and time on your feet…but it was the same old buff colored sandals and sneakers and casual stuff you can find anywhere by searching for “comfy shoes”.

I really find myself wishing someone would make something in between the two extremes. Some of us like to spend a day out walking around the city in a dress- for example on a date that involves lots of ambling around around museums, the park etc, where you need your feet not to hurt an hour later but you’d like to look nice too. Those comfort shoes on the other page would NOT do, nor would those pink stilettos pictured above. Can’t someone make something stylish- not “formal” necessarily- that ISN’T murder for a day out?

Hi Jennifer,

it sounds like you’re looking for the same thing most of us are: stylish comfort. But I should point out that that as the link above indicates, the article you mentioned is about comfortable WALKING shoes, so you’re right, it probably won’t contain the styles you’re looking for.

Of course, sex appeal and comfort are subjective, but you may find some brands worth investigating in the comments of this post:
