What to Do When You're Stuck Between Shoe Sizes

By

We've all been there. You find a really cool new pair of shoes and the 9 ½ is too small and the 10s are just a little big. Instead of giving up on the dream of those new shoes and moving on -- you have another chance when you're stuck between shoe sizes.

Using Insoles in Shoes that are Too Big

Recently I bought a new pair of Clarks boots that are super cool. I was stuck between sizes, but couldn't find anything else I liked. Instead of settling for a boot that I really didn't want, I went with the bigger size and then bought an inexpensive pair of insoles to put in them. That is the key. Not only does the insole give you just the right amount of padding to make the bigger size comfortable, but the shoe can actually feel better.

Now, you don't want to be buying shoes that don't fit you, but getting a pair of insoles to help the fit can sometimes give you the little boost you need. I suggest bringing the shoes home and walking around the house just to make sure. If you don't wear them outside, you can usually still take them back to the store if they don't work out.

One more tip: make sure you don't get the cheapest insoles at the store or you'll be picking up bits of foam after your third wear as they disintegrate into nothing. But you also don't need to buy the most expensive ones either. After dropping all that money on a cool pair of boots or loafers, the last thing you want to do is spend more. Make sure that the shoe works for you with the insoles -- wearing them inside only for a day or so. Nothing is worse than shoes that don't fit.
