Men's Shoes by George Esquivel, Handmade in America

By , About.com Guide

Men searching for quality handmade shoes often seek out cordwainers from Italy, France and England, and it's true that some of the world's finest shoemakers can be found in those countries. But thanks to Los Angeles-based George Esquivel, fine ready-to-wear men's shoes, and high-end bespoke footwear can now be had without a passport.

The designer's story is a fascinating one. Born to drug-addicted father, and having spent much of his youth living in motels, Esquivel's mother instilled in young George a sense of faith and a belief in hard work that would later pay off as he began training with Emigdio Canales, a retired master cobbler.

Who Wears Esquivel Shoes

Each pair of Esquivel shoes is made entirely in his southern California shop. Custom fittings, use of some of the world's finest materials, and the designer's attention to detail has earned him famous fans like Justin Timberlake, Nicolas Cage, Arnold Schwarzenegger, members of The Killers, and Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page.

As popular as they are with some, Esquivel shoes won't appeal to everyone. Though the designs have classic roots, many of the styles also have an artsy, contemporary edge that might put off customers looking for something more traditional. It's that same edginess that makes them perfect for the fashion-forward guy who is looking for something a little different.

Esquivel Ready-to-Wear and Custom Shoes

Though he was recently commissioned to create a pair of shoes that cost $70,000, most of Esquivel's custom shoes range in price from about $800 to $4,000 per pair. The majority of styles from his ready-to-wear line cost between $500 and $1000.
