By

Ready to break out of your winter boots and step into some fabulous flats and heels?

Well, you're in luck. Because the hottest trends in spring shoes for 2014 include some of the most exciting style updates we've seen in a while.

Let's take a look at all the glorious details.

Heels: Reveal Yourself with d'Orsays and Two-Piece Pumps

If you're itching to show off a little bit of skin on the side, then you're going to love this season's selection of heels.

d'Orsay and two-piece pumps are unbelievably hot, and what's great about these style is that they're flattering and sexy, without having to be over the top.

You can choose to hide your toes, or expose them. It doesn't really matter; it's that hint of arch that makes this design so alluring.

As an added bonus, if you choose an otherwise timeless style, there's no need to put your d'Orsays away once their trendiness has passed.

Beyond d'Orsay and two-piece shoes, there's also a big trend brewing via backless shoes.

It's been several years since we've seen dressy mules, and for the full comeback we're going have to wait another 6-12 months. In the meantime, you can show off the heels of your feet with this season's selection of open-toed mules and high-heeled slide sandals.

Sandals: Cage, Gladiator and Other Strappy Shoes

We'll be seeing a lot of strappy shoes this season. And by "strappy," I mean really strappy.

First, ankle straps are everywhere. You don't even have to buy a pair of heels to join in the fun, as there are plenty of ankle-strapped flats to choose from as well.

Daring souls can opt for a pair of trendy cage sandals, but those of us prefer to stay on the safer side of things can always jump on the bandwagon with a pair of simple multi-strap sandals.

When it comes to shoe styles as complex as these, I tend to gravitate towards straps that are on the skinnier side. They're easier to balance with a variety of outfits.

If you know you're going to be wearing heeled sandals with a lot of shorter fashions, then there's no reason to shy away from wider bands and straps. Just be careful not to overwhelm the rest of your outfit.

And, for those of you who prefer your strappy shoes without heels, there will be plenty of gladiator sandals to choose from as well.

Flats: The Hottest Heel-Free Styles

Flat shoes are kind of all over the place this season.

We have a few of last year's top styles returning for another round. Most notably, two-piece flats.

Women's oxfords and smoking slippers are also back for another season, though they're not quite as prevalent as they were last year.

And, slip-on sneakers and casual flats are hot again this year as well. They can be found in a wide variety of colors, patterns and styles, including everything from metallic styles to shoes embellished with studs.

Aside from those trending styles, all the usual suspects are present and accounted for, including flats with pointed toes, round toes, ballerina styling, and espadrille detailing.

With so many choices, there's no need to resort to heels just to feel trendy or stylish this season.

Colors: Top Hues for Spring 2014

Watery shades of blue, like the ones seen on this pretty slingback pump, are among the hottest colors for spring.

Every spring brings a bounty of light neutral shoes, and 2014 is no exception.

This year, the most popular of the warm-weather neutrals are sand and camel shades -- both of which are perfect for the season's popular pastel fashions.

Another favorite choice for spring is two-toned black and white shoes, which have been gaining popularity over the last few years.

Happily though, if you're looking for a bit more color, you won't be too disappointed.

Blue is one of the top footwear colors of the season, with the most popular shades being mid-tone, royal and ocean blues; followed by watery shades of light teal, aqua, and turquoise. Here are tips on how to wear all of those blue shades and more.

If you're looking for something with a little more heat, you can't go wrong with shades of coral or mid-toned pinks.

And finally, don't forget metallics. Always a favorite for warm weather, this year's hottest styles feature highly reflective shades of silver or gold.

Heel Shapes and Heights: For the most part, wedge heels have gone the wayside this season. But other than that, there are no limits when it comes to the type of heels you'll be able to find this year.

High, low, medium, chunky, dressy, stiletto. The list is endless.

And, even if you do have your heart set on wedges, it's not like you won't be able to find them. Designers just weren't quite as wedge-crazy this year as they have been for the past few. Don't worry though, they wedges stay away for long.

Hot Feet? Not this spring. In addition to all the skin-baring and strappy options mentioned above, there are loads of shoes with mesh and perforated uppers available.

Patterns and Prints:

  • Stripes - Probably the hottest pattern of the season, I've seen a wide variety of striped shoes. If the regular, vertical and horizontal stripes are just too plain for your tastes, there's a decent selection of chevron patterns available too.
  • Animal Prints - There's a little bit of everything going on here, but snake, crocodile, and other reptile prints have a slight edge over their zebra and big cat counterparts.
  • Also Look For: Dots, florals, and color-blocked patterns are available in small doses this season.
