Top Trends in Winter Boots for Women 2008 / 2009

By Desiree Stimpert, About.com

When it comes to winter boots for the 2008 - 2009 season, women have loads of options. Booties, ankle boots and knee-high boots are all hot, and no matter what you're heel preference is, there's plenty of variety. Here are some of the hottest trends to look for, and when you're done with that, be sure to check out some of my top picks in Winter Bootsfor women.

Winter Boots with Edgy Style: Biker boots, rocker boots ... whatever you want to call them, rugged boots with lots of hardware are hot this season, and they can be found with low or high heels. If you want to add an edgy look to your winter wardrobe, look for black styles with buckles, straps, decorative zippers and attitude to spare.

Flat Winter Boots: Of course you don't want heels on your snow boots, but this season's trend towards flats and low heels means you can skip them on your winter fashion boots as well. I especially love really tall, dressier styles with really low heels -- they're great for pairing with skirts when you have to do a lot of walking.

Riding Boots: Equestrian-inspired boots are never really out of fashion, but this season, there's an abundance of them available. While they're still casual in nature, riding boots have a more posh, upscale vibe than a lot of other flat boots.

Buckled, Belted Winter Boots: In addition to the straps, belts and buckles that can be found on many of the styles listed above, belted and buckled boots have become a trend in their own right. Belts, laces, ties, wraps and other strappy things on everything from urban styles with flat heels, to ultra-feminine high heel stunners.
