High Heeled Work Shoes

Top Picks for the Office 2013

If you're lucky enough to work in an office where you're not on your feet all day, you may spend a lot of time in high heels. But with office dress codes, finding high heels that are appropriate and stylish can be a little tricky. Here a few styles that should be acceptable for most office environments, but still have style to spare.

Joe's Jeans 'Odam' - Slingback Pumps in Trendy Colors

One of the easiest ways to break out of the "boring pumps" rut is to look for shoes that are just a little bit different, but still office-appropriate -- like a pair of slingback pumps. As long as they're not too trendy or over-the-top, sling-backs never go out of style, and they're one of my personal favorites.

This particular pair has canvas uppers that make them perfect for warm-weather, and they come in two of this season's hottest colors: coral and pastel blue.

Rachel Roy 'Gardner' - Reptile-Embossed Heels

One way to stay within dress code guidelines while still avoiding falling into the boring trap is to look for shoes with texture. It's usually pretty easy to find great-looking pumps with snakeskin- or reptile-embossed uppers, and there are also lots of other options like tweeds, nubby fabrics, or even tapestry fabrics.

The pair of shoes shown here is a great example of basic pumps that are taken to the next level with their snakeskin-embossed leather uppers. Want to up the stakes even more? Combine texture and a unique or vivid color.

Nine West 'Blonsky' - T-Strap Pumps add Style to the Work Place

It's amazing what a simple strap or contrasting accent can do to up the style factor on a basic pump. For example, here's a pair of pumps that are chic and sophisticated, and, thanks to those thin t-straps and ankle straps, have loads of style to boot. Available in red, purple, teal and black suede, or smooth black leather, these gems have wearable 3.5" heels and are regularly-priced at about $85 per pair -- but they're currently discounted to $55-$65, depending on the color/finish.

Belle Vita 'Wow' - Low-Heeled Pumps for Work

Here's one that should please nearly everyone, and not just because it's such a versatile and timeless choice, but also becauce it comes in a huge variety of sizes and widths. Offered in U.S. sizes 5 - 12, and extra narrow to extra wide widths, these classic pumps have the lowest heels on this list at 2.25 inches -- but what they lack in height, they make up for in variety, as there are loads of colors, patterns and finishes to choose from.

Steven by Steve Madden 'Ravesh' - Pretty Bowed Pumps

Guess what? There's no law (and as far as I know, no dress code) that says you can't wear shoes with simple-but-pretty embellishments. And they don't get much prettier than these bowed pumps from Steven by Steve Madden.

Available in blush patent or black nubuck, these are the kind of shoes that make you feel special just for putting them on -- and their trend-free style is classic enough that you can wear them for years to come.

Chinese Laundry 'Area' - Colorful Heels for Work

Cool mint patent, poppy red suede, and bright pink suede are a few of the colors and finishes these basic-but-beautiful pumps are offered in. So, unless your workplace also has a policy against certain colors, these 3.25" heels should work in any office environment. And even if you are confined to black or neutrals, there is a nude patent version of these mid-heel pumps that is lovely as well.

Prada Square Toe Pumps - Career Pumps with Low Chunky Heels

Image: Nordstrom.com
As far as office shoes go, these square-toed pumps from Prada have a lot going for them: heels that are only 2.5" high, and also chunky so they're far easier to wear than high stilettos; a design that is both unique and classic; luxurious suede uppers; and two divinely royal color options: red or purple.

Yes, these shoes are expensive -- and they're certainly not in my budget. But if you can afford them, then you might be able to justify a purchase like this if you consider the fact that they'll stylishly serve you for years to come.

If they're out of your price range, then let them serve as an example of classic-not-boring style; and as a reminder that even if you're confined to a dress code, you're not confined to basic, black, or boring shoes.

Nine West 'Callen' - Chic Heeled Ankle Strap Shoes for Work

Image: Zappos.com
Nine West always has a great selection of chic, stylish shoes, and I've totally fallen for these posh-looking pumps.

The pointy-toed vamps give them a thoroughly professional look; the mid-height 3.5" heels give them a nice feminine feel while still being wearable; and the wide, buckled ankle straps give them that little something extra, but won't seem dated anytime soon.

Available in black, pink or white, these shoes ring up at $85 per pair.
